The Koestler Awards are the premier awards for prisoners’ art and writing. This, its 53rd year, saw a record-breaking 8,789 pieces of writing, music, film, fine art and design from offenders, secure patients and detainees.
The winning entries are currently on display at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank centre – one of the most famous arts venues in the world. The exhibition is being curated by former winners of the Koestlers and is on until the end of November.
Many of the pieces look outward – landscapes, space, heroic figures. Others, like the depiction of a Brixton cell above, are more introspective. I would strongly recommend a visit.
